This is the second book I have read of the 6th Infantry Division. The first by a Doctor serving in the 18 Infantry Regiment. I found it to be well written yet hard to read due to the brutal nature of the war they fought. From France to the gates of Moscow and then the slow painful retreat fighting a foe that would not lay down and give up as well as General Winter, a formidable enemy that never lost and for whom they were ill prepared to fight. The brutality of the Russians is well laid out and the subsequent brutality of the Germans. The stupidity of the leaders and the immense bravery of the men. All in a backdrop of a land that was unforgiving and deadly during the winter. This is a must read and a very welcome addition to my library. Thanks to my wallet for this one.
