Panzer III Ausf J. Das Werks, 1/16 scale.

Who has the quad 50 on a half track?

Had to step away from my regularly scheduled benchwork to do a couple of promised projects for other people. Now, back to this build. The road wheels, idlers, and return rollers would slide right of the spindles everytime I moved the kit and it was irritating the heckom out of me. I fixed this by melting a lip on the end of the spindles by heating an exacto blade. Just enough lip to grab and hold the wheel bearings. The return rollers are different so I nurled the end of the molded shafts in the rollers. A quick and dirty fix, but it works...

There is a slide piece in the Pak 40 that follows the barrel when it is elevated. There are 2 arms that mount to the back of the plate and the plate slides up and down between the 2 layers of the shield. The arms fit into holes on the sides of the frame under the gun and while they tended to stay, they would wiggle in and out so I did the heated blade mushroom to them as well.
Andy supposedly built test shots or full kits of these and no mention was made of problems with the wheels staying in place.

I saw Andy's videos and no, there isn't a mention of that. In the build video he has the inner wheels on with the outer ones off. I wonder if he glued the inner wheel on and just painted them attached? They would still roll because of the hub bearings.

I guess I will figure it out when I get there.
Actually the instructions show just the inner wheels on, until the tracks are built. Then it shows adding the outer wheels. So evidently what they are telling you to do is glue the inner wheels on the shaft, you know, without telling you. I don't know. I'm going to do it my way. It would bother me having those wheels glued on right now...haha.

Just starting the idler arms next. This thing is dragging. But I'll keep watching yours and keep on building. Man it takes a lot of space on the work bench. I dont think I'll do any more 1/16 after this one. As a matter of fact I have ordered some more 1/35 German armour to build as well as some 1/32 aircraft. I think that will keep me busy in retirement.
