Something Different at Horse Guards

Today, 11 July, the Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) took over duty as King's Life Guard from the Household Cavalary. They will be mounting the guard in the Mounted Duty Boxes at Whitehall for the next 10 days.

In 2000 the LdSH(RC) are served as Queen's Life Guard, their cenntenial year. They are now celebrating thier 125th year of service, standing up in February 1900. Their first active duty was during the Second Boer War. On their return from South Africa in 1901 they received the King's Colours. They went on to serve in WW1, WW2, Korea and Afghanistan. They were also deployed on several UN and NATO missions.

Good luck in this weather, its been 35c in London the last few weeks.
I remember going up to see my brother on guard duty with the Blues and Royals. Although he was a tank commander he had to learn to ride a horse as they all do :) All the cavalry regiments are actually mechanised so Tank or armoured recognisance regiments.

They do a fine job learning on the fly like that. I guess the horses are pretty use to the routine also.
The troops and horses are members of the Strathcona Mounted Troop. The members are all serving members of the LdSH(RC) volunteering to serve up to two years with the troop. In addition to daily training with and care for their mount they must maintain currency in their military trade and be ready for active deployment if required.

For their ceremonial duties in the UK they are riding Household Cavalry mounts. They arrived a few days early to practice ceremonial drill and get used to their horse.

They usually limit their performances to Alberta from May thru October as they are funded solely thru the Ceremonial Mounted Troop Foundation.

Cheers,

I dont know what happened with my brother, we were no longer in touch but something went bang in the tank (chieftain) and he lost his hearing in one ear and was offered retirement or reassignment so he ended up in the spares R.E.M.E. warehouse. :)
