Possibly my new obsession...

I told you not to mess with that wiring! :smack:
You were right! I sided with the mild 8n tractor "experts" at first, because I wanted to be safe, who said that coil is to hot, however, the "hold my beer" 8n members said run that dragster Accel. It became quite the debate on the Ford tractor forum...haha. I'm running the hot coil...

I bet that did get heated. Wonder what's down stream from the coil that needs the extra power.

Who says it can't dig post holes?

I don't know. The thing it can do is burn points. I thought about putting the milder coil in for a test. Problem is it's a bit of a pain and I'm learning that even though the tractors were all built to the same specs, over years of use they seem to develop an individual liking for this or that, that another one may not like.

Input voltage is key. I advise putting your resistor block back in line, or buy lots of points and keep a matchbook handy.

I have a new "no external resister" coil. When I put it in the engine didn't act as spunky, but yes, burning points is an issue with the hot coil.

What is the battery voltage with the engine running? Voltage regulator out of spec.?
A guy might think. 28 hp. tops, might not lend itself to a whole lot of "spunk".

There isn't any wiring going to the regulator. The tractor was changed to 12v at some point, so all the 6v stuff is un-hooked. The key switch has been changed to a push/pull ignition switch, then wired to a new start button.

Didn't hit reply for the voltage regulator reply. I wonder if the new 12v ignition switch thats on it has some sort of resister?

The 8n made it through both pastures bush hogging. Life is good.
I have an OEM steel fuel line, sediment bowl gas filter screen and the elbow with gas filter screen fitting for the steel line coming. Battling trash from the tank getting to the carb, but I can remove, teardown, clean the carb and have it back on

running smooth again in under an hour.
Over 100° degrees and no hint of the tractor overheating in the fields.

The next part to get replaced is the exhaust manifold. Since I almost needed earplugs while running the tractor I suspected the gaskets where leaking. When I removed the manifold there wasn't much left of either of the gaskets and the manifold itself was cracked clean in two. While the tractor was down for the repair I also tighted the head bolts, put new gaskets in the carb and drained/added fresh coolant. I'm pleased that the only exhaust sound is coming from the tailpipe now 👍
Btw, the local shop I got the new manifold from has a non running, but complete with good sheet metal 1951 John Deere B for $1,500...uh oh 🙂

Nice one Tim, can't tell the scale. :rotf
I'm kinda getting the bug. Just found out in the craziest way that my old bachelor days pickup truck is still running in GA. Sold it 30 years ago so someone in Milledgeville GA, as things happen, Eric is moving there right now and his finance guy is the guy who I sold it to! Eric has this way of running into people I have met all over the southland.
Anyway, it really has me thinking of trying to get that ol' truck back. 78 Chevy Bonanza, it was on it's 3 motor when I sold it. I was rough on trucks back then. :rotf

Do it Bob, if for the story behind it alone!
My wife still has the car that her mom & dad dated in, a 1939 Ford Deluxe. Has TN 1955 plates on it.

I had old VW beetles back in high school. My first car bit it on some ice. Over the years I bought a number of REALLY old 50's era beetles of which I believe most of them have probably survived in one form or another.. I know the 1947 I had back in the 80's went to California, then back to Texas. I heard from the current owner a couple of years ago and he is working on it. Turns out it is a guy that was in the Oklahoma City VW club back in the 80's and I knew him back then.
I still have my last "old" beetle here in my garage. Overall it is in quite good condition especially since it was in storage for about 30 years. Thing is being in storage kept it in quite good shape. It needs new paint due to various things that changed over the time, but no rust to speak of and the engine can even be turned over by hand. Parts are readily available and I have some mods that were done back in the day to make work now. Just been busy.

I had a 74 with an automatic transmission, which broke.
A 72 Super Beetle. The heater channels were completely rusted out so I wore a snowmobile suit driving it in winter.
A 71 bus. The gear shift lever pin was missing but learned to find the gears anyway. It didn't have any passenger bench seats, so friends would bring a lawn chair to ride. That was funny stuff right there!
My favorite beetle was our '68. We had it completely restored from the pan up. It was flawless and beautiful!
