USS Intensity PG-93

Rhino

Super Moderator
US Coast Guard Veteran Clyde Thomas Connell was born in 1913 in Alpena, Michigan.
HMS Milfoil was "born" 5 August, 1942 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada
They two were introduced to one another 31 March 1943 and they were inseparable for over 2 years that followed.

The Flower-class corvette, HMS Milfoil was acquired by the US Navy and modified to meet the needs of Atlantic convoy escort as a Gunboat in World War II. USS Intensity's crew were US Coast Guardsmen. I have never met Clyde. I did happen upon his son-in-law Doug and daughter Anne during my daily work activities and struck up a conversation about ships, the Coast Guard and Vet's. Mr. Connell was PG-93's Quartermaster.

This is NOT a TLAR kit. This is a conversion of a White Ensign 1/700 HMS Bluebell for presentation to honor those that sacrifice to provide the liberty and freedom we all enjoy.

A lesser Man might have changed the armament, slapped on "PG93" decals, put her on a ocean base and presented it. "Not I" says the Rhino. Besides, a Canadian-built vessel, crewed by the US Coast Guard in US Navy service? How could I refuse?

First, DISASSEMBLE! Something I almost never get to do! HMS Bluebell's ventilators, 4.7 turret, 2-pounder and 20mms have GOT to go!
USS Intensity carried 3' .54 caliber (Skywave) guns fore and aft and 20 or 40mm cannons in tubs midships. Her bridge and forward gun platform was 6 feet taller and her hedgehog launcher was elevated as well. I put a blast shield on the hedgehog launcher. 3' cannon ready ammo boxes are located out of harm's way

Midships gun tubs were likely populated by 20mm (White Ensign) Oerlikon guns. 40's would cause an already very "lively" ship to be less stable in the big seas Atlantic open-ocean escorts encountered. 40mm guns would be COOL!!

The differences between the Canadian Corvette and US Navy Gunboat become more visible. The vintage White Ensign Flower class Corvette kit came with 2 vessels in the box and metal parts. The metal inclined smoke stack just would not do. None of these parts are for molding. You may find some of them a little less than perfect.
There's a stubborn divot in the back of the bridge that is giving me fits. I'll get 'er!

It's almost time to stick tiny PEE bits to Intensity. Skylights, hatches, hose reels, windscreen for the British style flying bridge. I plan to add an absolutely inaccurate ships wheel and Anne's 1/700 dad at the helm to the bridge.

Anne asked me how much such a model might cost and guessed $200.00.
Clearly our new friend doesn't understand what Sea N' Sky does for veterans or why. At what price Honor, I ask you? No Veteran has ever been asked for $$. EVER.

I find it sad that honor and generosity are such strangers in our great Nation these days. Perhaps I am not the businessman I imagine myself to be. :bm:

Thanks for enduring yet another teensie model ship project!

.015 copper wire life raft racks. Intensity carries no ships boat, but she's loaded with life rafts.

Started the base. Just wait! I have a plan. After giving other model ship guys a lot of grief about their flat calm sea bases, Guess what!?
Thanks to Greg Tost for selling me the AK water goo to make the wake.
PG-93 will be in a hurry. 15 to 16 knots! WOOO! Haulin' the Mail!

New mast today. I added what must be hull stiffeners to the hull. I almost forgot these!

How about a nice 24-pounder for added firepower?:silly: Nah. The 3' .50 caliber guns will do just fine.

The USS Intensity Saturday stopping point. Testor's PLA enamel Sea Blue for horizontal surfaces. Model Master enamel Medium Gray for the vertical surfaces. Ocean gray would be accurate, but I'm allowing for scale. It takes a while for the old enamel solvents to cure, so Intensity will sit for a day or so. Skylights are Tamiya acrylic silver and will get clear blue for winders.
Teresa's colored clear resin base is made to fit inside the lid of the clear box. Easy to transport and easier to display.

A really clever guy might hang a P-Boat or a PB4Y-1 on patrol from invisible thread from the top of the lid.:hmm:
Thanks again for looking in!

USS Intensity PG-93 will be delivered to her new C/O 17 February 2023. Just in time to make the trip to her new homeport in Bay City, Michigan in the care of her new skipper.

For such an auspicious occasion and for others that may inevitably follow, a properly official looking document was needed.
A copy for the relieving officer and the officer being relieved, See?!?:silly:
Thanks again for looking in!

Sadly, QM3 Clyde Connell passed away December 1999. This build is for his daughter and son-in-law. The oldest sister kept all the family pictures and Coast Guard memorabilia after their Dad died, so I wanted to do something special for Anne & Doug. Clyde owned a 27-foot Bayliner called Intensity II after WWII. Anne remembers many happy times on the water with her Dad.

See here the completed "Honorarium Terrarium" (?) "PG Under Glass" perhaps? The commemorative artwork covers a big icky scratch in the clear cover. Such is an example of my small (no kiddin'!) efforts to honor those that sacrifice so much to provide the warm, comfy blankie of Liberty, under which Americans sleep soundly every night.

This is what we here at Sea N' Sky do. :salute::capsmiley::pilotsoldieron

USS Intensity, PG-93 delivered 18 March 2023. Her new "Skipper" was pleased beyond what I can describe here by our humble efforts.
Mrs. Connell plans to show off her Dad's ship to her family and display it prominently in their new Bay City, Michigan home.
I am pleased to have done my minuscule bit in Honor's name for this family.

That last pic is so awesome! Thank you for adding that here. Their smiles scream volumes of praise and gratitude for your work!
