Takom 1/72 M60's Double your pleasure, double your fun....

.. he says with wild enthusiasm and an over abundance of optimism. While digging thru the stash for a subject I actually found a kit I had bought for this. (I know, its amazing I actually found something.) So until the March 1st kickoff,....

Some may recognize the title if you were fans of Wrigleys Doublemint gum and/or the Doublemint Twins. For todays useless trivia, one pair of twins from a 1980's Wrigleys ad campaign have a much more well known older sister.....

I wonder where I will find a kit for this March campaign? Decisions, decisions...............:hmm:

No, not such a smart-ass. Well................
Usually I build one of my own models for MMM. I have a couple of Helicopters (1350 USCG Pelican, 1/700 Chinook & Seadragon) that are ready to finish and write instructions for, but I hoped to make something a little more grand than these.
Hey Maybe..............Maybe, not a ship at all this time!!
:hmm:
I have an idea! :yipee:

My bad choice of words, perhaps sarcasm...

Well, it would be cool to see a 72nd scale figure tinkering on an 'RC Chinook' on a Quarter display base...

I had a similar thought, but my figure would have been 1/35 scale. Too funny! in a larger scope, a 1/35 scale model contest, using 1/700 and 1/1200 models could be an interesting project.

It is true that with text alone, the context can be difficult to interpret. I contend we are for the most part, like-minded. The fun of the hobby is most important. Jokes and sarcasm are welcome. I will confess I often enjoy "Renting space" in Greg Kimsey's head with my input. I don't mean to torment Greg. I'm merely promoting his creative genius.
Ain't I a stinker?!

This kit has two full kits in the box.

One builds as a USMC M60A1 with ERA as used during Desert Storm. The other builds a M60A3, unfortunately both sets of markings for this version are for the M9 Dozer equipped tanks. The M9 kit is not included in the kit so this will have to be done as a generic US Army M60 mixing and matching the decals in the kit.

With any luck, I can get both done. We are in the starting blocks.

RichB

Having had periods between chauffeur assignments this afternoon, I may have expanded my marking options. I was able to make acceptable sacrifices to the printer gods and it is now working.:drunks: :drink

Tonight's challenge will be determining if I can print tiny decals.

Cheers,

I am having to do some decal snooping on my Me410 build as well Rich. Might even have to do some tiny hand painted numbers. Good luck on the printer markings.

When the box is opened there is alot of tiny plastic bits in it.

Starting with two hull tubs.

There two A sprues, two B sprues and four F sprues.

D sprue has the detail parts for the A1 version.

Last but not least, E sprue with the A3 details.

Also included is a small PE fret and a length of copper wire for tow cables.

There is a small decal sheet with two options for each version.

I'm hoping to go outside the box for markings and print my own. A test print of markings for an Italian M60A1 and a Hellinic M60A3 is looking promising.

So far there are no parts failing to report for duty. Time to start cutting some plastic.

Cheers,

Steps 1 & 2 done with the suspension and tow hooks added to each of the lower hulls. Alignment bars that slip over the axles are included to help get the suspension sitting level.

With the next step the differences between the A1 & A3 start to appear so they'll have to be kept separate to prevent cross pollination.

I skipped the steps adding the road wheels and tracks for now and moved onto the upper hull. First up is the A1 hull. There are some ejector pins and marks that need to be removed and openings in the fenders from boxes molded into the upper surface filled. A bit of the turret opening needs to be filled as well where it extends into the fender. These may not be visible once the track is in place but I'm not taking chances. There are some holes that need to be drilled in the fenders and glacis for the ERA panels, these are marked on the underside of the hull. I thinned the front fenders and shaped them a bit. (Hard to see at this small scale but I know it's there.)

The upper and lower hulls press fitted for now. There looks to be some gaps that need to be filled so the wheels and tracks will probably go on after the hull is together

Onto the A3 upper hull. Basically the same details less the ERA panels.

Cheers,
RichB

It has about the same level detail as their Leopard 2A7 I built last year. One niggle is the shock absorbers are short on one end and don't reach the connection point on the swing arms (I checked my 1/35 Takom M60A3). It shouldn't really be noticeable once the road wheels are in place.

Cheers,
RichB
