The Numbers are known as a Points Spread. It originates out of Vegas ( IIRC ) The Number(s) is(are) how many points the favored team is "willing" to give up to th Under Dog. In some cases it's also is a determiner of how bad the team is. It's also referred to as "the Line". So is you were in Vegas , & you wanted to place a wager on a game .. .i.e. The Chargers vs. Vikings , The Chargers would give up 9 points (i.e. final score Chargers 35 - Vikings 28 ... 9 points would be added to th Vikings score - 28+9= 37 .... the Vikings win the bet with a final score of Chargers 35 - Vikings 37 .....

A points spread can really make or break ya ' in Vegas. Another Booster is taking the "High/Low ( Over/Under)" in the Week .... meaning that you add the Final score of the Monday Night game .... a certain Total of Points is put out there before you bet ... say 48 points. you can bet on what you think where th Final score will fall .. either Over 48pts. or Under. :D

Then there's "th Push" ..... Help Me on this one Cheyenne ... I've forgotten .... :blush:

Another example , first game listed this Sunday .
Giants -3 [ Giants minus 3 ] Redskins , ........ this means the Giants are giving the Redskins 3 points to the final score .

If the game final is Giants 17 - Redskins 12 , add the 3 points to the Redskins score , the final now becomes Giants 17 - Redskins 15 , Redskins lose .
If the game final is Giants 12 - Redskins 10 , add the 3 points to the Redskins score , the final now becomes Giants 12 - Redskins 13 , Redskins win .


If the final score is Giants 13 , Redskins 10 [ add the 3 points the Giants are giving up to the Redskins ]
, the final score now becomes 13 - 13 , which is a tie , or a " push " , which no one wins .

There are points given as in 6 & 1/2 , the half point means there can be no tie score as a final .

Whoever wants in has to have their picks in by 9/11/11 , before kickoff .

We will be picking the whole years Sunday , Monday nights games.

I thought of a little " failsafe " in case life interupts and we can't get our picks in on time .
If anyone misses getting their picks in by game time , we simply give the mia pickers the favorites for that weeks games .

Go to Lukes soccer game , the scores will be there when you get back , never miss a chance to be at something that is important to your kids !!!

No worries on the game...he has two a week and I'm at every one ;). Besides, I looked at the TV listings, and while everyone else is watching the Ravens and Steelers, CBS here in Albany will be showing the regional Bills game :sick: :bang head
 
Hey guys no point spread picks for me,too much thinking.I do enjoy playing on this site, www.beattheinsiders.com you pick all the games just winners and losers,no spread and compete with fans around the world,last year I was about 65%.

Cheyenne I hope your watching plans work out, i love days devoted to football on the den couch,by the way I was on your island at Beach Haven a few weeks ago,it was a great weekend.

Eric,I will be watching the Raider game in a Sanfran sports bar,I was hoping they opened home,I would have went,but no,two straight games on the road while I'm out here!
But,go Raiders

Also,It will not be the same if Peyton can't play this year.I really like and respect him

Yeah...OK I'm lost.

If we are doing a spread, shouldnt we be adding numbers to our picks? I'm a bit lost...

So with my picks, if the teams I chose win their games, what happens? I don't do the gambling thing so this is all Greek to me...

Andy , there are no points for wins , ......... every game you win is " one win " , count all your wins at the end of the Sunday - Monday night games and that's your total .
Next weekend all same - same - savvy ?
Add the next weeks total to this weeks wins , we just count your wins for each week .

Read my post with the opening line , ok Browns vs Bengals for another example , before the game has even started the score is Browns 0 - Bengals 6 1/2 .

I kind of understand...so what you're saying is whatever the final score is, if the Giants are still in the lead even after adding the 3...if I picked them to win, it counts for me? I'm with Anthony... As long as I don't have to do the math, I'll play ;). This is why I teach biology as I suck at math ;)

This is also why I could never be successful as placing bets or playing cards ;). I even have to have my brother-in-law place my bets at the horse races here in Saratoga ;)
