On Oct. 20th, my wife & I finally moved into a place of our own (we've been living w/ my mom for the last 6 years), and one of the first things I started on, was sorting out my new work area, and last night I got it pretty much wrapped up, finally.
I'm using a 6' long piece of counter top I picked up at Lowes several years ag. On the back is a 12" wide shelf for holding a lot of my stuff, and just works excellent for adding more room for things. I'm using large brackets to hang the counter off the wall, so I dont have any legs to worry about kicking or tripping over (although there is a bit of an issue w/ hitting my knee's on the brackets, but its not too bad). Above the counter top are 4 6' long shelves for holding all kinds of stuff. The first shelf has all the plastic bins I use for holding in progress models, or various crap I've collected that I use for building. Above that is part of my magazine & book collection thats slowly growing.
Next to my desk is my newest acquisition to my collection, a paint rack that I got for a song when the local hobby shop closed early in the year ( I also got all the paint that was on the rack at the time, a total of 71 bottles of paint). Its a rack for Floquil Railroad paints, that works excellent for holding pretty much any paints. The slots are large enough to hold any of the paints I have in my collection, plus I've found it useful for holding other things, since there' a lip on each shelf, so I can put other things on it and the lip keeps stuff from falling off. On the top, is a large open area, but the metal is kinda warped, so I've added a particle board shelf to it to level it out, just have to trim the wood to make it fit perfectly.
And last, but certainly not least, my stash. The last 4 years its been mostly boxed up b/c I had no room to store all of it unless it was boxed up. Getting them all unpacked and into the closet next to my work bench happened pretty quickly, I think I had them all unpacked on the Sunday after we moved, one of the very first things to be unpacked.
The next thing to get set up, is my paint booth, but not sure when that will happen. Got a lot of boxes piled up in this room, so there's not much room for it. Plus I'm not sure whether I want to keep my current design, or design a new one out of sheet metal and try to get a larger work area. I've got access to a company that does metal cutting w/ a laser, so I could get the parts cut, and recently the office acquired a small press break & shear so I could bend all the pieces how I want them, just not sure of the cost. Also thinking about getting a new fan, the current one is getting noisy.
