IPMS Alexander Lippisch Fleacon 18 23 April 2022

Who inspects the car each morning,
fills the empty tank with gas?
Pass the morons while they're texting,
Bids them all to kiss our ass.

We are off to Monticello,
Bright in all our shocking pink.
Teeny models and raffle prizes
Afterwards, see what I think!

That's Right Men! IPMS Alexander Lippisch' 18th show is today! Model fun and Flea (and larger) farts!
Stay tuned as this exciting story unfolds!

I think Highway 151 from Marion to Dubuque might be one of the most picturesque pieces of road in Iowa. Rolling hills and curves greet every driver on their way to Wisconasin.
We left Marion, IA at 0820 and made a pleasant sunny 42 mile car ride to Monticello. We had a sumptuous pre-contest breakfast at a local Monticello café' called Darrell's. They advertise "Tummy Happiness". Their sign is quite correct!
Have a look at the Google reviews.

Arriving at Fleacon 18's venue finds the ever affable Bill Kruger busy collecting entry fees. Good ol' Colonel (?!?) Miller directs entrants to the registration table to do your paperwork, then calls your name when it's your turn before the judging teams. After your models are judged, then you may place them upon the proper contest table for all to marvel at!

Pictures 3 and 4 are the raffle prizes with super raffle prizes on top. The Fleas traditionally have the most generous raffle of any show I've ever been to, including the National Contest.

One of the longest serving club members is not forgotten by his fellows.
IPMS Alexander Lippisch' nickname is "The Farting Fleas" after the Me-163 Komet rocket fighter designed by the Club's namesake. By the lettering on the club shirts, you would be ill advised indeed, to pass these members to closely astern. :stinker::facepalm::lol:

President Adam Mangold says the Club sold 26 vendor tables for this years event. The Berndes Center at the Jones County fairgrounds is a voluminous venue, so there was plenty of room for vendors, models and modelers. Lookie!

Jeff Herdon sold me a couple of bottles of his Wisconasin made Scale Colors paint that I couldn't live without. Jeff is busy enough, he's looking for employees. The dilemmas that accompany success and much better than those that accompany failure.
Ralph Fredlund's model car selection is fun to peruse!
Hawkeye Modelers Kent Kirkpatrick, Ed Buckely and Mark Johnson at work selling kits. Model vendor and Blackhawk model builder Virgil Stansbury in a cheery pose with his "Date" close at hand. Virgil is a grand ol' Gent!

Virgil built my favorite car and one of my favorite airplane models. Ernst Udet was one of my heroes as a fledgling pilot.

How about some more models?

Blackhawk Modelers display table. What have we here? Why, it's the General Lee!

Flea's displays: I would bet these are Wingnut Wings kits, built by Steve, who's last name I always forget. Steve hails from UK, but lives across the street from the venue.

It isn't hard to tell when Mr. Larry Clausen is in the room!

It is cool to be able to see the name of the contestant. Since judging is already done, the need for secrecy no longer exists.
More to come!

Thank you Chris for the wonderfull words.
I am sorry that I had another commitmentand could not spend more time with you amd Teresa

So we went after the Show and practiced my Sweetie's hobby tonight as well. Both Hobbies in the same day!! We escaped Imperial Entanglement and all manner of bar crawlers and RTB without loss or casualty.

A study in scale water effects. 1/700 Tamiya USS Enterprise CV-6. Appropriate wake at high speed. Spikey, peaked water is unconvincing.
Tamiya's 1/35 PBR on a river base. Cotton (🤢) resin and future water. Stringy, unfinished and sloppy looking. A fine 1/35 PBR model is lessened by hurried, unfinished, water effects. I do not think unfinished cotton should ever be used to simulate water. Smoke? You bet! When modeling water, Less is more. Don't dink around so much.
My own opinion.

At the least they should have had some coloring in the splashes and wake. Smoke and water to me are impossible to scale.

Peeping Defender 500. Liam is 6. He and his Dad made a star wars town and brought it to the show. He was very excited about the show!

Here we find the venerable JoHan 1/25 1934 Mercedes KR500 Roadster. I commented on how nice the finish looked and the modeler that built it said the body has no paint. It's been sanded and polished in the molded color and had BMF applied. His other finishes were well done!

Quicksilver is one of my old Tom Daniels Favorites.

How about some tanks? (You're welcome!)

Takom's 1/35 Russian Kashtah CIWS. Given recent events in the Black Sea, it seems their newest anti-air/missile system is less than effective.
1/72 Armor was prevalent this day. Ed St. Denis of Rochester MN, Rob Teubert from Madison, WI and Gary McDowell from West Virginia were among the stand-outs today. Gary was this occasion's "Long Distance Voyager".
20220423_115541.jpg20220423_115551.jpg20220423_115715.jpg20220423_115734.jpg20220423_115830.jpg20220423_115837.jpg20220423_115636.jpg20220423_115619.jpg
Larry Laws 1/72 Cayuse is of note. There were lots of really well built kits on display. I found it odd, given the Club's name the only Me-163 subject was the Japanese J8M Shusui version.

Awards of note:
20220423_153009.jpg20220423_153037.jpg20220423_153116.jpg20220423_153121.jpg20220423_153125.jpg20220423_153321.jpg20220423_153324.jpg20220423_153327.jpg
Joe Lotz and Roscoe Petra. I was glad to see Ross' conversion of the 1/35 Italeri Crusader be properly appreciated!
20220423_153402.jpg20220423_153404.jpg20220423_153358.jpg20220423_153327.jpg20220423_153420.jpg20220423_153422.jpg20220423_153428.jpg20220423_153430.jpg
Ed St. Denis' 1/72 Armor. I thought his Prime Mover/Trailer/Marder build was possibly the best model of the Show. The opinions of our hosts differed. Ed had a good day nevertheless!
20220423_153910.jpg20220423_153913.jpg20220423_153916.jpg20220423_153713.jpg
Larry Clausen was well awarded too! Little Liam's star wars playground got an award too.
You can see that awards were Gold/Silver/Bronze. The judging process is a lengthy one so it takes some time, with entries coming on to display tables the whole time. I expect the vendors did really well during judging, because it gave contestants something to do during that time.
20220423_125430.jpg
Gary McDowell built an improved model of the Aurora Forgotten Prisoner that he made as a kid. This is the "Best Figure" award recipient.
Gary's small armor models also fared well. You have to devoted to attend in Monticello from West Virginia!

Our Hosts placed the regular awards on the tables by the awarded models. Delivering awards take a little while too. Joe thought he got skunked. I was preparing to offer the traditional shoulder for crying on. "It could be they aren't done with awards yet." Yo see how well Joe did. No weeping proved necessary. The Best of's and special awards were announced.
Adam Mangold and his cadre' of Flea Farting Fellows did a fine job! 60 Modelers entered 211 models for consideration. 40% more models than any previous FleaCon. Did I win anything? OH! I actually did!

20220423_150650.jpg20220423_150601.jpg20220423_150705.jpg20220423_150701.jpg
Gold Award clean sweep! Chibi Godzilla got his first award and seemed excited about it! The Teeny Tiger Tank of Tunisia and "Three Mile Limit" received the same. I am humbled by the appreciation of my fellows.
Mark Karolus' build of TLAR's 1/700 Horace L. Hunley submarine too! Hunley caused quite a stir as modelers realized what He was and looked CLOSER at Mark's fine build! Now I gotta mail another package to Mark!

Teresa's harvest of raffle prizes slipped from 19 to only 17 prizes. The huge raffle attracted monstrous ticket sales. $1,100.00 worth!!
The started Revell Hawk Missile set looked to be the only less-than-new kit she won. Our return home was without mishap between big, April thunderstorms.

We found our grandson Russell near the Marion house and he came for a visit. I taught him how to open the box and read the instructions as his first step to model making. His Mom called and he said "I can't talk right now. Grampa and I are talking airplanes."
I awarded Russell a Gold Medal. "Best Grandson in the Whole Wide World" is how the citation reads.

When we returned from a rousing evening of laughing and singing at Pitcher's Bar in Marion, I made an effort to finish my FleaCon 18 photo essay. My sweet Girl found me asleep at my keyboard and sent me to bed around 0400 this morn. Yesterday was a big success for both of our Hobbies!

Quotable Quotes:
"AMPS Nat's? Amps Gnats? Is that smaller than an AMPS Fly, then? Is it black like the other flies in Minnesota?
Is the Gnat amplified? If you plug it in, does it go poof and let out a tiny bit of magic smoke?"
I love the play on words. Ed St. Denis was chatting about the National AMPS contest and I kinda got carried away.

"Virgil, Terrence & Trie Dactyl. See? We're a pair-o-Dactyls!"
"You're a pair of SOMETHING all right. I thought was funny before you explained it."
"I think is was funny to explain it!"

"If you want to wear your mask, feel free to do so. This also means we are just as free to point and laugh."

"That's a submarine? I thought it was a machine gun!"

Thanks again for looking in!
