How Important ?

Here is a question i find myself pondering every time i do a build...

I was looking at the fantastic effort that has gone into the MkIX Spitfire that Chuk posted a link too..and i find myself asking, how important to you is detail that will be covered up ?

We all tend to go to town on cockpits, maybe wheel wells, surface detail etc but there is some stuff that will never bee seen again. WnW aircraft are a good example where detail between the engine fire wall and the cockpit is usually pretty good but will never be seen again.

Looking at the MkIX n the pictures Chuk linked too the guy has gone to great lengths with the plug leads but having built that kit i know that once the exhaust and cowling mounting framework is fitted, they will never be seen again. Don't get me wrong, i have a huge admiration for guys like him because i believe their work inspires the rest of us mere mortals to do a bit better and so get a little bit more out of our own builds.

What do armour people do ? do you add detail in a turret when it can be seen if the hatch is open ? would you then add it if you were to place a figure in the hatch so it wouldn't be seen ?

So what do you think ?

Good question,Paddy!

It CAN be fun to do details that no one will see when the build is completed when every thing is in place.
It can give you a sence of satisfaction for sure!
If I speak for my self;sometimes I will do it,sometimes I don't,it's just how I feel then.

A good thing about forums like this one is that you can take pictures of your build when doing stuff like that,and people can see what you did on the inside before all is buttoned up.

I agree with Reconron, you should do it for your own fun or not, its your choice !
Sometimes I do, sometimes I dont.
If its visible (even a little), yes.

Good point Ron posting stuff on forums does tend to make you try a bit harder I know i have done some bits that would have been fine by me until i took close up photos then they just had to be re-done !

Personally, I find it pointless. I am a firm believer in NOT modeling something that will never be seen.
Especially at my build rate, I need to focus on what will be seen.

On the other hand, if there is a possibilty of it being seen, by looking through a hatch or peeking through
a vent, then it is really cool if there is something there to see. It let's your mind imagine that the
whole vehicle is filled with stuff.

On the other, other hand I am in complete awe of people who build models from the complete inside out, all
the nuts & bolts, pistons in the engine, working brake linkage...etc.

I find it fantastic to see the skill and love guys put into theyr models.

To be honest you cant really say something is not going to be seen if you take photographs of it and post it on the internet. It might not be seen on the final pictures or model BUT those pictures will be there inspiring others (Or driving em mad trying to get theyrs looking as good )

Adding details to parts of a model that will never be seen again after the model is finished is not for me, I would rather put extra time and effort into getting the exterior finished to a high standard but I do like watching people go all out and add as much detail as they can to their models.

Usually i never detail anything that won't be seen, like engines and so, if i close the hood then the engine goes in the scrapbox for use with something else B)

Seen wonderfully detailed panzers with all small details scratchbuilt inside and then closed up for never being seen again! that for me is hard to understand, i would leave it open in someway to show all the work put in it :hmmm

I agree with Ron and Dave and the others... You do show if off to others when you post progress pics...

When it's molded in or when I do feel like it, I'll add details if nothing else to gain experience and practice for the times one would see it...like in the open area of a self-propelled gun...but I've also been known to stow something away into the spares bin if I have something else in mind for it...

I know that Wolf will be displaying that Spit with the cowls off- he just wants to know that the cowls fit. I guess it's an itch he's gotta scratch, and it will prove to him that the engine's done right. As for me, I love to noodle in detail, but I do it where I can open a hatch or two so it can be seen. I can't live with the phrase, "the cockpit opening is so small that not much will be visible." To me that kind of thing is a major focal point- the place you mentally put yourself- so it's gotta get the love. On the other hand, the tailwheel on my Ju388 is simply blanked off with a bit of styrene sheet. Ain't nobody gonna care! :coolio

I am also one of those "If I can't see it, I don't bother with it". But I do admire the people that put their whole heart into a model and detail it to the point were you just wait for a little guy to jump in and drive or fly off with it.

I think its brilliant that we all have different ideas on what is important because that's what makes individual builds interesting to others. There is a place for the guy that builds OOB and spends days on a superb paint scheme along side the guy that spends days on a small detail and absolutely dreads the painting
I think my view is i detail till i get bored then move on to the next bit......so its a completely variable thing with me. The better the kit is detailed OOB the more i am inclined to add to it

that said my favourite things are Aires full detail sets
