That is cool- and back in that day this is not to different from those stunts in 'Jackass' - 'ok Gene, you get in the plane and we'll push you off the boat, head for the beach!' You know someone on the ship was taking bets that he took a bath in that cold water.

Six years later they are dressed like leather Eskimos, flying in open cockpits firing machine guns at plywood aircraft covered in fabric. Crazy.
 
Notice that the ship was stationary. All he did is run down a ramp and hopefully picked up enough speed to keep going. Gotta wonder if those old ships could make enough steam for him to lift off the deck without even a run up.
