    Tamiya Spitfire Mk IX (1/32)

I cant argue with the quality of the parts and the fit. Probably the b est i have come across but i would take issue with the missing detail. Parts that in this scale should be prominent are simply excluded. the lack of a wiring loom which can be seen especially between the V on the top of the...

    Kotare Spitfire

I have search most of my extensive library on the spitfire an in my opinion this is an anomaly that may have been fitted in the morning to get the aircraft out for this publicity shot and removed and painted strait after. This is one of a series of staged publicity shots of 19sqn in 1939 at...

    Kotare Spitfire

Well i am always learning. The spitfire at first used std arch type hood but it was found to be to low for tall pilots ( actually not very tall pilots as well ) so in 1938 a bulged top hood was introduced which i thought was the Malcolm hood but that was introduced in 1941 as differs because...

    Latest Acquisitions Revisited!

Very odd, i found 2 sources that say water but now i find one that says you must use their own thinners. Water definitely does not work :-) One of the points of the paint is you dont need a mask and you can spray indoors as its non-toxic and odourless. so that kind of rules out other thinners.

    Latest Acquisitions Revisited!

On tbe subjects of paint. while trying to find alclad brass which i have now found incidentally, i bought some of this new MIG atom paint (brass) It says on the bottle for brush or airbrush and it does brush ok in fact very well but its to thick to spray. I tried thinning it with isopropanol...

    Tamiya Spitfire Mk IX (1/32)

Wow, huge question and a million answers. Primers depended on the material, the manufacturer and the type of top coat With a cellulose top coat then light sea and mediums sea grey undercoats were common. Red was typically used on fabric as a shrink coat rather than a primer, you see #red on...

    Tamiya Spitfire Mk IX (1/32)

I think i mentioned that i am building this for someone else, its a request :) I'm not going mad on it, you could add a lot to this like any build but its going to be 98% OTB the engine is quite nice, it made up of 50 pieces believe it or not. again you could really detail this with piping...

    Tamiya Spitfire Mk IX (1/32)

That could work Paul certainly worth a try. As much as the problem of wear is what's underneath and not removing that as well, thats why i experimented with foil as a base as while paint will lift using for instance a n auto rubbing compound it wont lift the foil. I expect it will come down to...

    Tamiya Spitfire Mk IX (1/32)

I have often wondered at what stage the Merlin was painted. Most modern restorations look quite wrong with black castings and shinny fixings. Looking at these pictures and a very good you tube video my guess is they were sprayed once fully assembled so none of the fixings/Screws would have been...

AI colorization with ChatGpt and AI generated images.

I think this sort of thing is great if its for private use but the Internet is awash with badly coloured or wrongly coloured B&W pictures. You often find people arguing over a point of detail like a rivet pattern or a marking and completely ignoring the fact the subject is the wrong colour...

    Tamiya Spitfire Mk IX (1/32)

If i use chipping fluid i dont need to bare metal foil the surface first, i can just spray it silver as a base coat. I cant do that if i wear the paint with abrasive as i did at first as you just cut through to the plastic. With chipping fluid you dont use abrasives so its easier..

    Tamiya Spitfire Mk IX (1/32)

Well i do like to complicate things for myself. I had a specific finish i wanted to achieve so bored with just sticking bits together i skipped a chapter and tried some paint. I started with a bare metal foil base, then a white primer then MRP mid stone. That didnt end well, way too bright and...

Malcolm hood would be fine IMHO, tooth past works well as a clear polish but it maybe to late if you have attacked it with a sanding stick :-)

    Tamiya Spitfire Mk IX (1/32)

The wings have obviously been made with the future in mind with all the gun housings but no armament, that said the kit is 20 years old now and if we were going to get armament i think we would have got it by now. You can see why this has a reputation of being "the" kit. The fit...

That's Great Paul thanks. Funnily enough i mentioned Ian Roussel and this is how he bends steel, its hard to bend angle iron but if you do a load of cuts along one of the angles then bend it to close the cuts up it can be done. I am nowhere near understanding how to crate a compound curve for...

It always made me smile when they found just what they were looking for....British scrap yards are not renowned for their hovercraft parts :-) Actually i was thinking more ....Johnny Cash, one piece at a time.

Thanks for your thoughts chaps. I am thinking of using Italeri' s Mephistopheles aero engined car as a base for a "what if" road car. It will need a change of shape, wheels ,additional parts like lights and fenders and so on so its all in the mind at the moment. it could be a fun project...

has anyone tried to work styrene sheet or the plastic people like Plastuct use ? i have tried to get it to bend and stay where i want it but it ends to go back to where it was over time. I am wondering about making Mudguards in 1/12 ?

    Tamiya Spitfire Mk IX (1/32)

Hinges for the rudder ,elevators and ailerons are metal and moveable, useful for the posing for pictures but a bit overkill. Fit of parts is exemplary and very Tamiya. as you would expect i dropped the reflector gun sight , never to be seen again :-) ages on my hands and knees with a torch, i...
