    EJ's 1960's fleet oiler build AO41

Thanks for all your compliments guys! I think I'm done! I'll bring it to the club tomorrow nite. I might put it in the Mid Michigan contest on February 2, then I'll give it to my buddy that served on her in the 60's. Gun are all on. I broke 3 more barrels off while rigging, and had to repair...

Latest Acquisitions Trying a new adhesive. Heard good things from some guys at the club about it. I'll let you know how it works. EJ

    EJ's 1960's fleet oiler build AO41

Got some more done. The anchors and the decals. Had to use decals from the stash because there were no "ones". Also shows the rudder and screw installed and painted. The radio mast installed. The 5"-38 3"-50's and single 40's. Nearly as soon as they were installed, I broke off a...

    EJ's 1960's fleet oiler build AO41

Well, The hoses and cables are finally done! Touched up some paintwork. I had sprayed some glosscoat on the bow and stern where the markings go, so I think I'll place the markings and spray a flat coat on the whole thing to protect the paint before I do the rigging. There's quite a bit of...

    EJ's 1960's fleet oiler build AO41

Another hose set done, for a total of two, including the lift cables and cable drums. Painted the cables steel and the drum (1) ocean grey. Got the cables cut and tied to the hoses for two more sets. The fine wire is .006 inch copper, taken from a small cable and separated into strands...

    EJ's 1960's fleet oiler build AO41

Here's a couple pics of the "jungle". These were taken after her 1960/61 refit, removing the catwalks and adding the raised wooden cargo deck. I'm building her just before the refit. The picks were taken by Cecil Faircloth, and e-mailed to me. I printed them and then photographed them, that's...

    EJ's 1960's fleet oiler build AO41

The first hose set. Just the hose hangar cables and hose. Took me a long time to do this. Still have to rig the booms and the boom masts. I'll try the Lycra for that. Gotta trim the wire off at the cable drum yet. Waiting for the glue to set up good. There's a lot of rigging on this thing. I...

    EJ's 1960's fleet oiler build AO41

Well, had a bit of a setback. The solder I used was TIX, a low temp solder. The round part on the end of the boom needed a hole in it. When I drilled the hole, 3 of the four parts broke off. Had to clean them up, re-solder with a harder, higher temp solder, and repaint them. Here they are...

    Latest Acquisitions Revisited!

Latest Acquisitions Yup, they are pretty plain. :hmmm Want to make them plane tow rigs like these - with a bit of scratchbuilding. I've got a couple Essexes that can use them. EJ

    Latest Acquisitions Revisited!

Latest Acquisitions Well, I had made mention of getting a new spru nipper and cutting guide to my wife. SURPRISE - she bought me both. I had ordered the same and gotten them several days ago, so now I have duplicates. Luckily however, these are not exactly the same. The cutting guide is shapes...

    Latest Acquisitions Revisited!

Latest Acquisitions Oh gosh. I build in fits and starts. Most builds I get a hang up about something and put it aside and mess with something else. I've got more kits to build than I'll ever get done, the list is quite long. I always say "I'm done buying kits", but, well, something always comes...

    Latest Acquisitions Revisited!

Latest Acquisitions Black paints. I'm absolutely terrible at mixing colors. Found an assortment of blacks to go with the previously obtained Tamiya and AK colors I bought. In the end, I guess I'll use the Tamiya. Made up a color chart of blacks that I have in house. This does not include...

Very nice looking water! I've never been successful at even coming close to making water at all, so I continue to put my ships on pedestals and bases. EJ
