    Special Lightning Sailboat

Well, I've decided to make a couple changes. I never liked the bench style seats and the "floor boards" . These are as the kit instructions showed and were ok with the client. The cockpit is somewhat out of perspective as the bottom of the hull up to the design waterline was ground off so...

This is what I did at the club meeting; Cleaned up 5 die cast cleats and chromed them. I'll start on some smaller two horned cleats for the smaller lines. They are also die cast, but coated with a brown maybe lacquer, to look like wood? I'll be sanding them anyway and chroming them as well. Plus...

I forgot - Went to our first IPMS club meeting yesterday. We used to meet in a church basement, but they don't want us there because of the covid restrictions here. Since the first of March, we've been talking with a school called "The Aviation Academy" It's out by the airport on the grounds...

Yeah, I'm gonna use some of those too for the smaller diameter lines. They are pot metal but finished with a bronze tone of some kind. The one in the pic is Molotoved, but only one coat and didn't cover well. EJ

Been really busy, but have collected several styles of bitts and cleats. The one on the left came with the kit, and I like it the best. This one has been cleaned up and painted with Molotov chrome markers. EJ

    Maddog Manufacturing 2020 Production

Ahh Yes, seems sometimes half my building time is actually looking for - parts, pieces that seem to vaporize into thin air, missing tools, glue, paint, misplaced sprues, etc. You are right - Life's too short Nice fix on the windshield. Kinda reminded me of the windshield on my jeep. EJ

A bit more, Finished the lashing of the furled sail to the boom and covered up all that work with the sail cover. Then, made a sail bag for the jib sail. That sail was taken down, stowed in a bag when not used. With the sail cover and sail bag. Today and tomorrow more cleats will arrive...

The sails and running rigging for this baby will be as seen when at dockside, so the sails will be furled or stored, the running rigging will be in place, ready for use when getting under way. Got a boom support made and installed. This is required on this type of rigging as the sail actually...

    Special Lightning Sailboat

I made a list of terms, Just for the standing and running rigging. By comparing them to various diagrams I can visualize what they are and the purpose. It's like learning a new language. Very much different than Machinist's Mate talk - " steam pressure, saturated steam/superheated steam...

All Righty ... What's on the bench today?

nice helicopter. does anyone know if there is a kit of a sea sprite or sea bat? they flew those off ESSEX when I was aboard. EJ

    Special Lightning Sailboat

Thanks guys. It's falling into place now. Bought some chrome paint pens yesterday as I'd like the cleats and chocks to look like chrome plated brass fittings. If that works out, I might do the turnbuckles eyes and rings too. I'm gonna do a test and post the result. The car guys at the club...

    Special Lightning Sailboat

Since I was a Machinist's mate on an aircraft carrier, I know nothing about anything with sails. The standing rigging was pretty clear, but the running rigging is a mystery to me. I just got a book - "The small-boat Sailor's Bible" by Hervey Garrett Smith. A paperback published in 1964. This...

    Latest Acquisitions Revisited!

I finally got some mini wire rope from BNA Model so I can finish my "lightning" sailboat. Took a bit over 7 weeks to get. EJ

    Special Lightning Sailboat

Back in April, I cut the wire for the forestay, but installed it in the wrong place. Had to do it over. The piece I installed was too low on the mast therefore, too short. By doing so, the last piece of wire rope was too short to finish up. I ordered more on April 21. Comes from BNA in...

    Special Lightning Sailboat

Two topmast shrouds done, one port side, one starboard side. With those little turnbuckles I was able to get the mast perfectly strait and tension the wire nicely. Next the midmast shrouds, but I have to wait for more wire. BNA said it was shipped this morning, whenever that is in Australia...
