Turbine 48008/48009 Su-27 Pilots

Turbine Modelling Details, of Estonia, have produced an excellent line of products for the Su-27 in 1/48th scale.  In this scale, there are Flankers from Academy, Kanga, and Trumpeter.  I own the previous two and hope to update them although the Kanga kit is a poor copy of the Academy Su-27.  Covering the canopy using tarps, the intakes and exhausts with covers (from Turbine Modelling Products) and all I need for my Kanga Flanker are some pilots.  Here we have them.

Set 48008 includes two standing pilots.  Within the re-sealable bag there are two resin pilots.  Each is a one piece casting with no discernible flaws in reproduction.  The sculpting is very good.  The first pilot, shown above, holds his left arm up as though adjusting his helmet's visor.

Patches are molded on to facilitate painting but these can be whittled off.

The second pilot has his visor down over his eyes.  My only concern, from comparing to photographs, are the belts which seem to end abruptly on the back.

A close up showing the accurate details of the uniform.

Set 48009 states Pilot Plus.  There are actually two pilots in the package along with three arms allowing different poses.  the first pilot has no arms and his visor is down.  He is ready to take off.

The head, torso, and legs are all one piece with excellent definition and the oxygen hose is molded free of the body.

With the mask on and visor down, no flesh areas need to be painted.

The second seated pilot has his oxygen mask on but the visor is up and he is grasping the oxygen hose.  Only the right arm needs placing to complete this figure.

Again, the casting is excellent with the head, torso, left arm, and legs in one piece.

There are two right arms, one saluting, and a left arm for the figures.  The saluting arm is delicately cast and care will be needed to remove it from the casting block.
The only down side of these Turbine pilots are the lack of instructions and there are many variations of the uniform colors and even camouflage.  It is best to visit various web sites to see the Russian pilots to make a decision.  One last thing, by removing the bracket on the helmet, the pilots can be used on a wide variety of K-36(DM) ejection seat equipped aircraft such as the Su-24, MiG-29, and Su-25.
