SILENT RUNNING - books & additional help/ questions for U-boats

Well don't get to excited just yet!:smack:
As I said in my quick post in
'whats on the bench today', I love Uboats and have tried to stop this breaking through while I have plenty 'going on' anyway with shelf Queens all over the place but I can't help myself:drool: . I have been eyeing off my Mk9 C for a while and.....................................

........I was right about that wasn't I:smack:.
Still love the Uboats but have changed my direction on this post.
After a lot of thought, research and some crazy submarine purchasing, I am seriously considering doing a 2 or 3 book series on a number of subs from 1939 - 1945.
Idea : Book 1 39 - 42, Book 2 43 - 45 or dividing them by Type 7 & 9, then a another on the others.
Even maybe throwing in a U.S. Navy Gato. Maybe.
The intent is to offer a reference source that has detailed info on variations of builds per type, technical illustrations to make it clear and interesting(done in the same style as the Wingnut Wings instruction diagrams) plus finished models as examples for other modellers. I also want to throw in some fold-out art works of Uboats as well.

*Overall I think this is something that submarine modellers don't have currently but would love to have .......I would love some feedback from you guys on this idea to see if I am on the right track, or maybe you have some ideas that I could include?

Anyway, I have been doing a ton of research on the net, pouring through my own references and have come up with the subjects and a rough idea of what I want to do. So this will be my area where I can update you guys on where I am at and post my ideas and some research, and hopefully get some information and answers from you guys.:coolio2:
I am also interested in anybody supplying some extra info and pics in line with my list below but please, I don't want a general download of pics of anything UBoat here! I already have a lot and probably anything that you are going to find on the net. So don't take this the wrong way, I just don't want to have this space filled with general blog stuff please.
I have in 1/72 - 5 x Mk7c's, 4 x Mk9c's, 1 x Mk 21, 1x Mk 23. In 1/35 I have a Mk7c, Mk 23, a Mk28 Seehund, a Piber......plus waiting for a Gato in 1/72. Plenty of extras as well for all of these in PE, Resin and 3D printed Plastic.

REFERENCE DETAILS
I am after specific details and/or Uboat numbers and pics , which I will list here. Mainly trying to achieve a number of boats spanning as many interesting mods as possible.
  1. Mk7C or C/41 U-boats that have been upgraded to the Turm IV conning tower modification but retained or refitted the deck gun.
  2. Mk7C or C/41 U-boats that have been upgraded to the Turm IV conning tower modification with a Quad 20mm on the lower platform rather than the 37mm but still retained the early slotted deck.
  3. Mk7C or C/41 U-boats that have been upgraded to the Turm II - IV conning tower modification with a Snorkel with an early slotted deck.
  4. Mk7C or C/41 U-boats that have been upgraded to the Turm IV conning tower modification without a Snorkel but running a wooden strip deck, especially without life bouy containers on the forward left decking.
  5. Mk7C or C/41 U-boats that have been upgraded to the Turm IV conning tower modification without a Snorkel but fitted with an early slotted deck, with life bouy containers on the forward left decking.
  6. Mk9C and C/40 U-boats that have been upgraded to the Turm II- IV conning tower modification but retained or refitted the deck gun.
  7. Mk9C and C/40 U-boats that have been upgraded to the Turm IV conning tower modification with a Quad 20mm on the lower platform rather than the 37mm.
  8. Mk9C and C/40 U-boats that have the Turm IV conning tower modification with the earlier style deck (without the quick dive mod to the forward deck).
  9. Mk9C/40 U-boats with the Turm IV conning tower modification and the quick dive mod to the forward deck but have a forward deck gun mounted (very rare maybe none at all - not to be mixed up with the Mk9 D2 which ran the3.7cm SKC30U on the forward deck.
So as you can see I am pretty particlular about the photo refs I am after.
I fully realise that most of you probably won't know what that was all about but thats OK, just fishing for the few who might be right into this subject, so that i can move forward with a greater reference established.
For everyone else just sit back and see what develops.

Thanks Mike and Piet. :)
As a further note I have taken the time to restore my Mk7C/41 UBoat dio build to its former self , fixing the damage that the Photobucket debacle caused. If you would like to revisit this one and see a couple of images I had not previously added, as well as the full build story restored, please follow the link - Mk7C/41 Dio
I have added a few additional images like this one.....

😲:wow:Thanks Mike, appreciate that. I hope that I can do an even better job on this one. 🤞

Wow, that is a big one! 1/32 scale?
Love the display with the back drop.....scratch built?

Build many years (20+) ago my first 1/35 scale scratchbuild

The display cabinet has a hardwood base and steel cover with rivets and portholes on either end , also it has build in speakers with sound bites and the soundtrack from DAS Boot, special led lighting that can be changed in different shades ''At night time it looks fantastic''

Its in possession of my older brother .

Just an Update here on this post.....it has now changed to a UBOAT research post for a possible couple of model/reference books please refer to the starting entry or read below........

I have a big collection of Uboot related books if i can recommend some ,

If you can read French all the books By Luc Braeuer, they have Loads pictures/info you don't see in most /if not in any English books
And of cours the U boot in Focus magazine and books by Axel Urbanke.(easier to get out side Europe )
Also full of pictures and information you don't see in other books 1,2,3.4and 5 are sadly out of print and go for high prices one the WWW .luckily i was init from the beginning.

In both series of publications you find 99% answers on snorkels,,dates ,fates ,U boot numbers ,camouflage patterns ,insignia and repairs/ bridge modifications

If i was ask to keep two U boot authors i would keep these .

Wow Piet, your just what I was hoping to find. Thanks for posting up that incredible list of reference books.
I didn't realise that all of these were available. They all look pretty wonderful to have , especially the ones above, but I would have to spend a small fortune to find exactly what I am after.
Would you be able to scan some photos for me and supply via Dropbox if I give you an email with particular details?
I tried to message you but it would not work with your name.

I am after specific details and/or Uboat numbers and pics , which I will list below. Mainly trying to achieve a number of boats spanning as many interesting mods as possible. Do you have the time to provide me some much needed references please.
No1 has been the biggest hassle. Trying to find a turm IV 7C and/or a 9C with a deck gun- they are suppossed to exist but I cannot find any pictures. Same issue with a quad 20mm. Only found 2 of those and the pictures are not great.
I have seen some of the Boat in focus on Ebay but they are $70.00 each posted and I don't know what I am getting. No 11 has a Quad flak on the front but I don't know what else is contained inside?
Looking for these initially -
  3. Mk9C and C/40 U-boats that have been upgraded to the Turm IV conning tower modification but retained or refitted the deck gun.
  4. Mk9C and C/40 U-boats that have been upgraded to the Turm IV conning tower modification with a Quad 20mm on the lower platform rather than the 37mm.
  5. Mk9C and C/40 U-boats that have the Turm IV conning tower modification with the earlier style deck (without the quick dive mod to the forward deck).
Grateful for any help.
Ian.

How about a new Section on our forums dedicated only to UBoats? You could be moderator on it, we'll move anything you deem related to the Uboats into that Section.
I can also create a new Resource Section for UBoats and dedicate that to the same Forums?
