I'm in with the Sci-Fi.
Starting with the base

According to my carpentry advisor, I let this dry over night and put a coat of polyurethane on it.

Spray the poly if you can, I'm sure your airbrush can handle it- if you brush it on poly tends to puddle out on the woods denser spots- My guess is the thickness of the coat. Have run into this several times refinishing stuff.

Sounds like a job for the Badger 3155 Hybrid. What do you thin that stuff with?

Probably mineral spirits, but the brush works just as well with less clean up.
