Green Tiger I ?

The Zod

Active member
I have the Tamiya 1/48 N.Africa Tiger I. The paint scheme calls for a 50/50 mix of olive green and dark yellow, for a light green paint job. I thought the Tigers in N.Africa were of a brownish paint?:hmmm

It looks like the sPzAbt 501 initial colour was a light olive green. Maybe this might shed some light or muddy the waters.

GENERAL ,

The Tigers that were in & around Tunisia are the Greenish ones. Tigers in other parts of Afrika had the 2/3rds Dk Yellow & Honey Brown camo on it. Essentially you take th Honey brown color & cover 2/3rds of the vehicle with patches. Honey should be slightly darker than the Dk.Yellow. on th Flat Brown side.

Here are some shotz in Color !! From Life Magazine. A G.I. is loading the forrunner to C-4 under the Tiger & you see th aftermath. COmpare the G.I.'s uniform & helmet color to th Tiger I .

BTY - This Color is a Hot Button issues among German Armor builders. Some, even say that it never exsisted. :blink

You can see what I mean here ... 17 pages takin about th Tunisian Tigers. I mean ... It's hard to beat these pix. I believe that They were on the Khaki Olive Drab side.

If it were Me . I would shoot it in Tamiya Khaki-Drab(XF-51) + Khaki(XF-49) & dry brush with Khaki & a touch of dark Yellow. ??

If you can/want to , get your hands on a Copy of Tigers in Combat pt I. Awesome reference of th 501st. I also think there's a Combat History on th 501st. but it's $$$

Hope this helps !!

Thanks for the replies everyone. This is the first time I have ever heard of honey brown.:hmmm

I don't know of anyone who makes that color. Now to figure out what color to use. heck,I just may build a panzer gray one. Much easier.

If it was easy, anyone could do it!! It's fun to try something new, give it a shot!! (y)

Thanks for the links.Maybe mix those two colors? I have never airbrushed Valejo paints.Easy? Hard?

This is my understanding
"On 1941-03-17, it was ordered that all vehicles in Africa should be painted Gelbbraun RAL 8000 and Graugrün RAL 7008, with the base colour being Gelbbraun RAL 8000 with one-third of the base colour covered by Graugrün RAL 7008. The edges should be feathered. The areas to be painted with Graugrün RAL 7008 was not to be painted with Gelbbraun RAL 8000 first, though."

I would find those colours in the Air range.

71030 and 71024. No thinner, just spray. Awesome paints

I kinda always thought they look a lot like IDF armor paint. Green in some pictures, tan or light sand even in others.

You could always solve the problem like the US Army did, some C4 and alittle more C4, Oh just use it all. :D

GENERAL,

A good reference for the Honey Brown scheme is the Tiger I at Bovington. It's actually quite accurate as far as that 2/3rds camo goes.

Here's a little better explanation on Sturmgeschetz Vor

Here are a few Walk around shotz from Bovington.
