Desert - dio 6: Road Block

Hi all,

A new desert-dio in progress.
The first vehicle, a British radio truck, is already described in the "Armoured Fury" section(QLR on CWT).
Here just a memory, meanwhile the doors are mounted.

Second vehicle is a M3 Grant, in fact a M3 Lee with a new designed turret.
As this is the Academy kit, some interior pics.
I didn't do too much effort here, you cant see very much once closed.

And a walk-around.
Some dust, sand and pigments will be added later on the dio-ground.

Last time I promised a Step-by-Step how I make desert groundwork.
Here is the start.
Piece of wood, covered with foam. This can be the cheapest kind, it will be covered.
But mandatory, otherwise the wet plaster/paint will deform the wood.

Next build up some heights. Any material will do, but I prefer hollow shapes because of the weight.

Next will be the plaster, see you then.

Desert-dio 6: Road Block [update May 27]

Hi all,

More Step-by-Step how I make desert groundwork.
I try to bring some variation in desert-dio groundwork, this will be kind of rocky.

An assortment of stones and rocks in all sizes and shapes.

dio_1p.jpg

First layer: plaster with the right consistency.
Its a sound idea to mix in a few drops paint, so you already have a kind of precolor, and not totally white.

dio_1q.jpg

Here is the result of the first layer, as thin as possible, yet covering everything.
It is important to press some larger stones now in the wet plaster.
Stones should be IN the sand, not ON.
Dont worry about traces from the spoon, they will dissapear in the next layers.

dio_1r.jpg

So far about 3 hours work.

Second layer

First brush some preshades(dark brown)

dio_1s.jpg

Then, because the plaster is too smooth, add some rough ground (hole filler)

dio_1t.jpg

Track marks, not very deep, the ground is supposed to be rocky.

dio_1u.jpg

Now mix very fine sand(in fact crushed marble) with glue and water,
and little pigment to get some color variation
If you want it more sandy, just add more of this.

dio_1v.jpg

Result is a surface of rocks, stones, rough sand and fine sand and some pre-color.

dio_1w.jpg

Adding some piled-up sand beside the tracks and wheels.

dio_1x.jpg

Overview before airbrush

dio_1y.jpg

Stronger shades to accentuate (dark brown)

dio_1z.jpg

Filters(all Vallejo): dark sand, yellow ochre, neutral grey, Iraqi sand (all about 20/80 mix)

dio_2a.jpg

Last touch: highlighting edges and stones with silvergrey and then a matt varnish to seal.

dio_2b.jpg

Thats it....about 6 hours total work, not including drying time.

Something else.
Two Brens, above cheap plastic(Masterbox), below expensive resin(Verlinden).
Notice that todays plastic is sometimes far superior to resin !!
And much cheaper...

Desert - dio 6: Road Block [update May 27]

Hello, partners in crime

Figure painting is the hardest part for the average modeler, same goes for me.
Still it can make or break your dio, a good reason to do the best you can

Starting with 5 figs, maybe I'll add one or two more later, depends.
The heads done and one completed.

dio_2d.jpg

3 completed, they are somehow disturbed by reflections of the light, more matt in reality.
First two look like infantry corporals (Tamiya, Verlinden)
The 3rd is probably a Seaforth Highlander (Verlinden)
