Accurate Miniature RAF Mustang Mk-1A

My store is called The Art-Full Barn in Clarkesville, Ga.
Well I'll be damn. That's driving distance.
Wife and I are going to drive up to Toccoa when it gets cooler, she wants to see the Camp Toccoa site since she got into Band of Brothers last month. Might swing by Clarkseville.

So...whay color are they? The decal provided has them black and white, some half and half. I may remove the paint and use the decal.
Black faces with white lettering and indicators.

Small side note: my father-in-law, Korean war Master Seargeant vet, used to tell me stories of the BOB soldiers running by his house and singing in full gear. He lived an easy ten miles from Camp Toccoa. They would run up to Currahee mountain to practice rappelling. (which I also rapelled with my sons Boy Scout troop). I loved his stories of his childhood and his time in service.

I thought I would never get everything aligned to make the halves go together, but perserverance won the day.

Welcome Greg! Everyone here is still learning, even those of us that push our limits. One of the easiest ways to learn about something is ask a question. The drawings John Eaton posted on the smoothing of the P-51 wing I have never seen before but will be using them for reference myself sometime down the road.

Looks like your build is coming along well, keep up the good work!

Insomnia. Ugh. But, I worked on the model at 3am so not a total loss. So, in the first model attempt, when I put the fuselage halves together I forgot to put the rear wheel in first so I had to trim the pins down to get it to go in the wheel well. Not a huge deal. No way I am going to forget to do that again! Fast forward...
...I forgot to do that again! Sun uv ah...(insert face palm here)

I put the wings together and used Vallejo plastic putty slurry to fill the lines indicated in the drawings. Sand sand sand. Remark the fuel ports. Viola. I think it may work out.

I glued the nose halves together. They had, to me, an unexpectedly exceptional fit. Next came adding the wings. Once again, an almost flawless fit. Same for the tail pieces. This is a pretty nice model so far.

Well....Time to go for a while. Off to the store to "work".

Looks great Greg :popcorn
Thanks!! I am definitely not disappointed so far LOL.

Question: I don't know that much about the "rules" of camouflage paint schemes. Are they rigid so each plane looked exactly the same or was each plane different according to who painted it? I, of course, don't mind going exactly by the picture; but is it critical? I have never been to a model show but hope to one day. How much are diehards "sticklers" for the rules? I imagine pretty sticky...

The British had pretty uniform standards for camouflage, Greg. Here's a good example from Wings of Fame Volume I. This pattern was known as Pattern 1 and was used on single engine fighters. Early in the war the grey areas were done in Dark Earth, and in very early years of the war a mirror image of the pattern (swapped left to right) was applied on every other airframe on the production line. By the time the Mustang was in service the scheme pictured below was the standard.

Have mercy! Thank you. This is much more than I even hoped for. Incredibly helpful.

You guys have all probably seen or know this, but I found a great article on paint colors. Not specifically answering my question, but really good info on colors. http://www.gmodelart.com/2020/04/plane-colors-and-camouflage-wwii-us.html
Great find Greg, really dig those photos.
I love dissimular schemes like that but you know some of those could be enviromental effects, condensation on a flat paint job can make it look darker. Oil splatter, that one P51B with the darker around the wing roots looks like either oil or moisture from the prop wash maybe?

Thanks for that page John. I thought the RAF patterns were pretty uniformed.

My airbrush has absolutely given me fits tonight. Just goes to show you that expensive doesn't always mean good. I have Iwata darn it! Anyway, I hope I can salvage the paintjob. For one thing, I am out of the Tamiya Olive Drab at the store (and so is my supplier) and tried to mix something like the color in the printed photo. I used the old canopy from the ditched first build to mask the cockpit so hopefully that worked. I will mask and spray the new canopy tomorrow maybe after my nerves settle from fighting the airbrush.
