Calvin Tan adds a layer of paper towel under the parchment paper to help keep the parchment paper from curling.
 
I like his figure block as well.

I bought one at the same time as I got his first DVD. Have not used it yet but wish I had of seen his home made one first. Would have been cheaper.
Another trick is to wrap your paint pallet in foil. No need to clean it, just throw the foil away when it is covered in old paint.
