My cousin's boss was a pilot in the Turkish Air Force during the Cypriot War. I was invited, due to my interest in aircraft, to review his log books and photographs. I then had the bright idea to offer him a desk model of his aircraft. First mistake! His aircraft was a Grumman S-2E but the only models out there were the Hasegawa S-2A and the Hobbycrap, err, Hobbycraft clone. Since I knew I would be chopping it up to create the later model and didn't need the landing gear, I went for the more affordable Hobbycraft. As a pilot, he knew the E model was lengthened and widened. So, aside from the custom decals (fortunately in black and I found the perfect font in a Letraset Dry Transfer set) I had to ensure all the changes needed for the 'E' model were incorporated.
Yes, the photos are crap but look at the dates! 1992 for the build and 1994 for the repair. No digital cameras, let alone cameras on phones!
So, off we go and start hacking!
Decals are at the top. Notice the widened horizontal tail and elevators... That brownish stuff is A&B epoxy putty. Green stuff body putty is in evidence as well as the Ambroid masking liquid on the canopy (in other photos).
Here, I am adding ridges to the sonar bathtub using Slater's 0.001 inch rod with MEK in a Touch-N-Flow applicator.
If it wasn't for the repair I had to do (when the pilot brought the display model to his home after retiring), I would not have these photos which were taken by my cousin.
