This might be a slow one as we are heading for lockdown here in the UK again and unusually my work goes up as everyone else's goes down...Or it did last lockdown...

I will start off with what i have

This is the basic kit, as RichB pointed out this will fill a shelf on its own and the rotors dont fold out of the box........but

This a rotor fold upgrade made by www.scalewarship.com in the UK

25920 (15).JPG

Comes complete with the necessary rotor head parts and the wing fold stays to hold the blades once folded.

PE is extra and made by Eduard

and finally the kit decals look pretty comprehensive and the instructions are A4 semi colour.

I hate these end opener boxes that Revell use., the std top opening Tamiya type box is so much better as you have two ready made trays and you can see the parts.

Now where do you start ?

Looking at the various parts it looks like the door to the radar equip storage in the nose is a separate part ( spru 7 above ) which might prove very useful if i scratch a radar. Also although the tail doesnt fold it looks like Revell thought about it on spru 6 above as the kit breaks at that point and the hinges seem to be there...another possible scratch upgrade.. As if it wasnt all complicated enough :)

Off to a shaky start, what is it they say ? one step forward two steps back :)
The cabin floor has many holes marked out on the underside for different versions for example navy types have 4 seats and Army 8 and so on.
The instructions say drill 0.3mm ? now that is small but i do have drills that size so i did. I then measured the pins on the seat frames and they are 1mm which seems odd so i opened the holes up to 1mm. this makes sense because the marks on the underside are 1mm as well. All good ? no. turn the floor over and the marks on the underside of the floor dont correspond to the marks on the top :)

i did spot the holes underneath were staggered but assumed the seats were staggered...wrong ....

the lesson here is forget the part drilled marks and open up from the top face. You can see 2 holes completely missed their mark. Not a disaster but a warning shot across the bows to remember this is not a Tamiya kit.
I also noticed a large crack in the main cockpit glass so i have also written to Revell for a replacement, result 1 hour = 2 holes drilled in the right place, 2 filled and 1 e-mail :)

You will get it Paddy. Forewarned now is forearmed. I guess that is why they said to drill with 0.3 bits. Smaller holes to fix.

Ha ha yes paul that would be it :) Having studied the instructions and the PE parts and the Haynes manual i can also see the kit has a symmetrical duel control but the real thing is single stick and rudders with the co pilot position completely taken up with a radar screen, fortunately the PE gives all the correct parts to adapt the floor etc.

AAAAAAG. :ph:

I forgot to take a picture of the std control panel but i salvaged this from the spru shots

Its actually pretty good OTB and pretty accurate as well but as i have the PE i will go down that road.

Nearly everything is sliced off and the bottom section needs to be built up 1mm

DSC_1532.JPG

All the cowling round the instruments that was cut off is replaced by much thinner PE

And painted black/ anthracite .

The floor has quite a bit of work and PE because as i said earlier the kit is supplied Duel control which is ok for the Army AH7 version but not correct for the Navel version.

Looking ahead i can see some parts of the seats are not right. they should have an extinguisher on the back and unfortunately Revell decided to mould in the seat belts which will have to be removed. Colour is also a question. They seems to be a load of options from dayglow orange to olive drab with blue and black and cream in between. from what i can work out i think the orange covers are from the armoured seats, the kit has std seats so probably olive drab with sheep skin covers. The PE seat belts i think will look like PE seat belts, PE belts might work in 1/72 or 1/48 but by 1/32 they are too one dimensional i think and just dont hang right.

The Haynes manual or the "owners" manual as its billed is now my bible. the kit has many short cuts as a result of not being to sure if its a navy or Army version so seems to have settled on a bit of both :)

The manual shows a fire extinguisher on the back of the pilots seat and that is missing from the kit so i have spent some time today making one from plastic, alloy and brass tube, its very small but being bright red will make an impact on the interior.

One of the problems with PE is its 2 dimensional rather than 3 so anything i can add to the control panel will make it a little more 3D
this is my map light which again is in the manual but not the kit. the coil is copper wire wound round a .5mm sewing needle so again its minute :)

The floor of the cabin is shown on the instructions as a metallic finish in steel.. I went for the exterior grey but now having read the manual what i thought were pictures of a dirty (grey) floor are actually sheets of marine ply in their natural wood/brown finish. The manual describes the floor as a Aluminium honeycomb structure with a marine ply covering.. so some careful masking and some brownish paint has changed the floor for the better

Thats all for now but really enjoying this.. comments and suggestions always welcome  .

The large black boxes are the "Orange" ECM units/processors. The kits supplies these in basic form but they really benefit from the PE extras as they will be in view with the side doors open, the rear seat belts are shown stuck to the wall in the instructions but the user manual shows them hanging from a rail so you need to add your own. the front belts are on order, i want to see if cloth belts will look better than the PE ones in the back. They dont do the correct ones but i went through the catalogue and found some US ones that are pretty near and could be adapted. ( i hope)

Its a new method of construction to me, you basically build a pod that is the cabin and that then fits inside the outer halves of the fuselage.

I remember there was a reason but not the answer, why are all electronic boxes on aircraft black?

Looks great Paddy! :choppa:
