"WARM BEER AND MUDDY BOOTS" Vietnam 1967

JamesOLeary

Master at Arms
With things in my personal life being pretty hectic lately, I have not had much time to post replies to other peoples' posts although I have been reading through them and looking at their work. Nor have I had much time to work on any of my own projects or post anything.

Since modeling has been pretty slow for me, I temporarily changed focus from my "Let me see your map, LT!" diorama to something with just a single figure so I could have something that I might be able to complete some time soon. The figure is based off of one of Bravo 6's new releases "Boonie Rat".

Since I am going to have the figure holding a beer instead of an M16, I had to rework the lower right portion of his jungle shirt. I used a Hornet head with some hair added with putty (notice that he has "helmet hair" from having worn a helmet all day), and added the sleeve to the shirt since the unit this guy is going to be depicted from did not allow the altering of the uniform.

Once the bottom portion of the right side of the jungle shirt cured, I thinned it down a little bit more and applied putty to form the bottom right pocket, the pocket flaps of the breast pockets, and the pocket flaps for the thigh pockets. The reason why there is black paint around the neck was so I could see if the seam between the torso and the head had actually filled in properly.

Next will be to add dog tags, the right arm, and then paint.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks, Mike.

I got a bit more work done on this figure. I did not like how the left sleeve looked, so I scraped most of it away and redid it. I think it looks better now. Then I filled in and added to the right sleeve.

And you might not be able to tell until it gets painted, but I replaced the peace medallion with dog tags and a P-38 can opener.

I did some painting today since it was cold and windy outside. I got the face pretty much done and got the base colors laid in on most of the rest of the figure. Although not my best, I think he is turning out well for something done in s short period of time.

Very nice! I'm looking forward to the next steps. (y)

Thanks, Guys.

Here are some photos of my progress so far. I still need to dirty up his uniform and work on a base, but I think he is coming along fairly well. Some details to note will be the Carlin's Black Label beer in his hand, p-38 can opener on his dog tag chain, and the scratches on his forearms from "wait-a-minute" vines.

After I took the photos above and took a look at them, I realized that I forgot to paint the buttons on the trousers and shirt. So here he is with those painted.

Must be tough place he's at if "Black Label" is all he can get his hands on. :rotf

Wonderful work James :notworthy

Thanks, Guys.

Yeah, 2/47th Inf (Mech) did have it pretty bad being that Black Label was all that they were able to get. All of the other brands were usually take up by other units closer to Bearcat or support personnel at Bearcat. Occasionally they would get a better brand, but that was only on special occasions.

And to think I drank it in ND because it was cheap.

I really dig your painting style James, very expressive. He looks like he's about to whip out a WTF. :rotf

Thanks. He probably is about to whip out a WTF since the beer he is drinking is warm. :) :S

Thanks, Guys.

I think this one is pretty much done. I changed the title to "WARM BEER AND MUDDY BOOTS". I might need to do a bit of touch up work and get the title plate made, but that is about it. I muddied up and dirtied up the uniform and boots to depict a Soldier who has been out in the muddy conditions, but has been resting a while and has started to dry out. His M16 is placed on a piece of cardboard from a case of C-rations to keep it clean, pop flares are ready, M16 mags are ready in a claymore bag, and he has some cigarettes near the claymore bag. The ground is muddy and much movement is pretty evident from the way the mud has made it's way through the grass.
