"Young Entrepreneurs" Vietnam 1968 COMPLETED

JamesOLeary

Master at Arms
A few days ago I started another vignette. This one is titled, "Young Entrepreneurs" and depicts some enterprising young Vietnamese kids selling some watches, sunglasses, and mirrors to some GIs. I wanted to make a quick one to add to those items I am going to display at ModelFiesta in San Antonio, Texas on February 17 and I already had the figures built and primed as they were intended for a past project and were never used. Included in the vignette will be a wedgie of a M113 to give the scene a backdrop and context. I used the Italeri ACAV kit for the section of the M113. Since it is depicting a section of a gas powered M113, I made the headlight guards out of wire instead of using the kit guards which were for a M113A1. I filled/blocked off the open sections with sheet styrene. For tracks I am using the new workable tracks from AFV Club which came out at the same time as their new ACAV kit which is a very good kit of a M113. Since I did not want to cut up a pricey AFV Club kit, I went with the Italeri kit since it was sufficient enough for what I wanted to do with it. Besides adding the wire headlight guards, I also drilled holes where the bolts would go if the vehicle had the things on the sides covering the top part of the tracks would have gone.

Here are some photos of it before priming:

And here are a couple of it primed with black spray paint:

Like I said, I already had the figures built and primed from a previous project where I ended up not using the figures. The Vietnamese children are from Callsign Miniatures and are slightly converted. The GI is from Bravo 6 and is also slightly converted.

Here is the Vietnamese boy with a case to hold the items he is selling. Here I started painting him:

And here is the girl who will be holding some watches she is trying to sell:

Here is a GI checking to see how he looks in a pair of sunglasses. He has a 11th ACR patch on his right shoulder and a 9th Infantry Division patch on his right shoulder.

Last night I completed the painting of the Vietnamese boy. All I now have to do is add the items to his case.

And this is as far as I have painted the girl. I will be painting her shirt either light pink or white. after that and the hat, she will be done except for the watches she will be holding.

Thanks for looking.

That's crazy cool! Not the merchandise I expected to find for sale when I first glanced at this thread.
Too much "Full Metal Jacket", not enough ground Combat experience, I guess. :salute :eek:ldguy :pilot

I had to keep this "clean" since this will be viewed by family members of the Veterans of 2/47th Infantry (Mechanized) during their reunion in April and I did not want to put any of them in an uncomfortable situation trying to explain how things were over there in that regard. :)

Here are some photos of the girl after I completed painting her. I went with a white shirt. It took a few thin layers of the base color to give an even finish so I could start shading and highlighting.

Now on to cut these from the fret and place them in the case and in the girl's hands. Then I will be moving on to the GI.

The figure is cool and the PE will really enhance things. :ro: :dude

"Young Entrepreneurs" Vietnam 1968

Thanks, Guys.

Last night I started painting the M113 wedgie. The manner in which I paint US Military vehicles the colors they were painted in during Vietnam might be a bit different than the way other people paint theirs. This is how I do it: After the flat black primer has dried 24 hours or so, I will apply Vallejo US Olive Drab with a brush. Once this has dried a few hours or overnight, I will then apply Reaper's Black Green with a brush. I paint using vertical strokes so there is some streaking in the paint. This provides for some weathering without having to try to do so.

Here is the wedgie with the Vallejo US Olive Drab applied:

And here it is with the Black Green applied. For some reason it looks way lighter in the photos than it actually is. It looks almost black in actuality.

About 15 minutes ago I sprayed it with some dullcote, so that will make it even darker.

In addition to working on the wedgie, I also started painting the GI. The base colors are in place. I will be shading and highlighting as well as painting the skin tones after I get off the computer.

Thanks, Mike.

Instead of working mostly on the figure, I worked mainly on the wedgie. Since it was very windy outside, I had to find an alternative to spraying outside, and since my wife was not home, I decided to open up the bathroom window, turn on the exhaust fan, and spray dullcote in the shower area. I let the model dry for a bit, then drybrushed Ammo of MIG US Olive Drab to bring out some details. I also applied some dry transfers for the markings. I sprayed more dullcote and this is the result. It wasn't until I took these pictures that I could see the impression of a 9 above the 9 on the front of the M113. On my first attempt at the marking, a 9 stuck above the one that is shown. I had to remove it by scraping it off with a knife. I painted over the spot, but there is still an impression showing. I will have to paint over that again and perhaps some of the weathering effects might cover it.

Yesterday I worked on the figure and he is coming along fairly well, but since it is a gloomy day outside, the lighting for the pictures sucked, so I will have to take the pictures of the figure tomorrow if it is sunny out.

This morning I worked on highlighting, chipping, and painting the Panther on the trim vane.

Here is the vehicle after chipping:

Now to finish the boots and helmet for the figure and to weather the M113.

Thanks.

Since tomorrow's forecast here calls for clouds and rain, when the sun finally came out about a half hour ago I figured I had better get the photos of the figure while I had the chance.

I still have to finish the helmet cover, but the rest of the figure is done. Some things to note are the 9th Infantry Division patch on the left shoulder indicating unit of current assignment and the 11th ACR patch on his right shoulder indicating a previous tour with 11th ACR. If you look over his shoulder, you will also see his "reflection" in the mirror. OK, it really isn't his reflection, but it was the best I could do in this scale. :)

Here's the figure with the helmet cover painted. I also added some gloss coat to the lenses of the sunglasses and the face of the mirror.
