Signaller, Victory Company, RNZIR 1967 COMPLETE

JamesOLeary

Master at Arms
Hello All,

I will be starting my next project soon which will be a Signaller (RTO in American terms) from Victory Company of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment in Vietnam in 1967. The kit is one that I got from Callsign Miniatures in Australia a couple of years ago but hadn't decided to build it until now for this campaign. I still need to find the arms or will use some others that I might find appropriate from the parts box. I also have to find his boots. If worse comes to worse, he will be one of those Kiwis who were lucky enough to trade for a pair of US jungle boots.

Thanks, Guys.

I figured that New Zealand's contribution to the war effort should be recognized. Since there aren't any New Zealand specific 1/35th scale figures on the market that I know of, I thought the Australian figures from Callsign Miniatures would work well since many uniform and equipment items were similar, and the things that were different could be made easily enough. Now to find those boots! :)

Cheers,
James

Not much time left to get this done...I never could find the boots that belong to this figure nor the arms, so I decided to use Bravo 6 jungle boots and will look for arms from the parts box. Here the figure is with the radio attached to the frame for the radio and the boots put on the figure.

Now to attach the rest of his equipment...

I found his arms, replaced the handset with one from Bravo 6, and glued the arms on after I added all of his equipment. Next will be the application of some putty to fill gaps then I can prime and paint.

Thanks.

This morning I sprayed this figure with a bit of primer. I then started painting him around 1100 or so and now here it is 1445, so I think I got pretty far for just a few hours of painting. Looks like I will get him done in time.

Here he is with a bit of paint on him...

Now I have to do the deep shadows, paint the equipment and his weapon, glue the hand with weapon onto the left arm, and paint the boots before weathering and mounting to a base.

Cheers,
James

I worked on him for a couple more hours after supper last night. I think a few more hours of painting and forming a base will finish him off.

I guess it is about time that I also make the cord for the handset and the antenna for the radio.

Cheers,
James

Thanks, Guys.

I was able to get some work done on this project here and there over the weekend. The most time consuming thing was making the cord for the handset. The coiling of the wire wasn't the hard part, it was getting the correct length and figuring out which coil had to be stretched to get the whole thing to go under the right arm. Then it was not as pliable as I had hoped so due to the stiffness, the draping of the cord is not as realistic as I would have liked, but it is passable.

Here he is on the base with the Magic Sculpt I used for the groundwork primed with flat black...

And here he is with the groundwork colors in place minus the pigments that I will use later to blend the vegetation in with the rest of the groundwork.

Now to "plant" the vegetation...

James

Thanks, Guys.

Well, I am calling this one done. For the vegetation I chose to uses some dried palm leaves as though they were either hit with agent orange or were blown off the trees by artillery. Sparse grass and powdery dirt round out the ground work.

I didn't want to wait until tomorrow to take the photos as we are supposed to have severe thunderstorms tomorrow so the lighting these were taken under tonight isn't the greatest, but y'all get the idea. :)

I think he turned out pretty good for a figure that was quickly put together and painted.
